New Delhi, April 17, 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong appeal to Members of Parliament to support the Women’s Reservation Bill, emphasizing that the time has come to ensure rightful representation for half of India’s population in decision-making.
Ahead of voting in the Lok Sabha, Modi urged all members to back the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which proposes 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Assemblies under the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
“Crores of women are watching us… our intent and our decisions,” the Prime Minister said, calling on MPs to act with sensitivity and conscience. He stressed that after decades of delay, this moment presents a historic opportunity to empower women politically.
The Prime Minister also appealed to all political parties to rise above differences and support the bill unanimously, stating that such a move would significantly strengthen India’s democracy.
Alongside the women’s quota bill, Parliament is also set to vote on the Delimitation Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, aimed at restructuring constituencies and increasing the strength of the Lok Sabha to facilitate implementation of the reservation.
Modi highlighted that concerns and misconceptions regarding the bill have been addressed through detailed discussions in Parliament, urging lawmakers not to take any step that could hurt the sentiments of women across the country.
“Let us come together to create history and ensure that India’s women receive their rightful due,” he said.
