SRINAGAR, May 21, 2026: Fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and widespread rainfall across the plains of Kashmir on Thursday led to a significant drop in temperatures, bringing much-needed relief from the recent heatwave-like conditions in the Valley.

According to officials, fresh snowfall was recorded in several high-altitude areas including the frontier Gurez sector in Bandipora district, Zojila Pass along the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and the picturesque tourist destination of Sonamarg. Several other mountain peaks across Kashmir were also covered in a fresh layer of snow.

Meanwhile, the plains of the Valley, including Srinagar city, witnessed intermittent rainfall during the early morning hours accompanied by cool winds and cloudy weather conditions.

Officials said heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms late Wednesday night caused damage to a road in Bandipora district after mudslides and water flow severely affected the area. Water and mud reportedly entered several nearby homes, causing inconvenience to residents.

The rainfall also triggered waterlogging and mudflow in multiple areas, briefly disrupting vehicular movement and local transportation.

Despite the disruptions, residents welcomed the sudden weather change as temperatures dipped sharply after days of unusually warm weather across the Valley.

The Meteorological Department has forecast further weather activity over the next two days, stating that light rain, thundershowers, gusty winds and isolated hailstorms are likely at many places across Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday and Friday.

Officials added that weather conditions are expected to remain generally dry during the morning hours, while brief spells of rain may occur at isolated to scattered locations during late afternoons till May 25.

Authorities have advised residents, tourists and commuters to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas prone to landslides, waterlogging and slippery road conditions.
