UDHAMPUR, April 22, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has attributed the deadly Udhampur bus crash to negligence, stating that preliminary findings point to serious lapses by the bus operator.
At least 21 people lost their lives and 51 others were injured after an overcrowded bus plunged nearly 100 metres into a gorge in Ramnagar on April 20.
During his visit to GMC Udhampur along with Health Minister Sakeena Itoo, the Chief Minister met the injured and their families, directing officials to ensure the best medical care and continuous monitoring.
Highlighting the cause, Abdullah revealed that the bus was not being driven by its regular driver, but by an inexperienced substitute, despite the vehicle already having over 15 challans against it. He emphasized that reckless practices like overspeeding, overloading, and wrong-side driving continue to pose serious risks.
An inquiry has been ordered by Deputy Commissioner Minga Sherpa, and the Chief Minister assured that strict action will follow based on the findings. He also reiterated full support for the affected families and stressed accountability among transport operators.
