SRINAGAR, May 2, 2026 : The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecast continued unstable weather conditions across Jammu and Kashmir over the next few days, with rain, thunderstorms, hailstorms, and gusty winds expected to impact several regions of the Union Territory.
Director MeT, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, stated that on May 2, scattered areas are likely to witness intermittent light rain and thundershowers, particularly during afternoon hours, accompanied by gusty winds.
He further informed that during May 3 and 4, the weather will remain generally cloudy, with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain or thundershowers at many places. Thunderstorms, hailstorms, and strong winds with speeds ranging between 40–50 kmph are expected at a few locations during different parts of the day.
According to the department’s outlook:
- May 5: Brief spells of light rain or thundershowers likely at scattered places, mainly in the afternoon.
- May 6–9: Weather expected to improve, with mostly dry conditions, though isolated showers cannot be ruled out.
- May 10–12: Largely dry weather anticipated, with chances of brief light rain at isolated places during afternoon hours.
The MeT Department has also issued an advisory, warning of possible hailstorms and strong winds in parts of Central and North Kashmir, along with some areas of the Jammu division.
As a precautionary measure, authorities have advised:
- Suspension of boating and shikara activities during afternoon to evening hours on May 3 and 4.
- Residents to avoid standing near weak structures, electric poles, and overhead wires.
- Farmers to suspend agricultural activities between May 3 and 5 due to the risk of adverse weather.
Officials emphasized that public awareness and precautionary measures are crucial to minimize risks during this period of volatile weather conditions.
