SRINAGAR, May 2, 2026 : In a decisive move to combat drug abuse and its wider implications, the Jammu and Kashmir administration is working on a comprehensive three-year monitoring programme aimed at ensuring long-term rehabilitation of drug addiction victims.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, speaking at Raj Bhavan Srinagar, said the initiative will focus on sustained tracking and support for individuals recovering from addiction, ensuring they are fully reintegrated into society.
“We are creating a detailed rehabilitation plan so that once a person recovers from drug addiction, they are monitored for three years with complete support systems in place,” Sinha stated.
🔹 Strengthening Rehabilitation Infrastructure
The LG emphasized that while new rehabilitation centres are planned, the administration is currently upgrading facilities in existing centres. The Health Department has been directed to ensure adequate OPD and IPD services for drug abuse victims across hospitals in Jammu and Kashmir.
🔹 Tough Crackdown on Drug Peddlers
Highlighting a zero-tolerance policy, Sinha announced stringent deterrent measures under a well-defined strategy. As per the newly issued SOP:
- Driving licenses of offenders will be cancelled
- Vehicle registrations will be terminated
- Passports may be revoked
- Bank accounts frozen and Aadhaar-linked actions initiated
- Properties may be attached under the NDPS Act
- Lookout notices to be issued against absconders
🔹 Link Between Drugs & Terrorism
The LG also underlined the serious security dimension of drug trafficking, stating that proceeds from narcotics often fuel terrorism and radicalisation. “While some traffickers may appear prosperous, much of this money ultimately supports anti-national activities,” he said.
🔹 Public Participation Key to Success
Calling for a collective societal response, Sinha said religious leaders and communities are being actively involved to raise awareness. He stressed that the combined force of law enforcement, legal deterrence, and public cooperation is crucial to winning the fight against drugs.
🔹 Impact of Nasha Mukt Campaign
The LG highlighted the success of the ongoing ‘Nasha Mukt J&K Abhiyaan’, launched on April 11 from MA Stadium Jammu. Within just 21 days, over 50–60 lakh people have reportedly participated in awareness drives across the Union Territory, with a noticeable increase in enforcement actions.
As part of the campaign, the LG will lead a Mega Padyatra from the TRC ground to Lal Chowk on May 3, further amplifying the anti-drug movement.
The administration’s multi-pronged approach—combining rehabilitation, strict enforcement, and mass awareness—signals a determined effort to eradicate drug abuse and its far-reaching consequences in Jammu and Kashmir.
