LEH, June 09, 2026 : Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on Tuesday hailed the historic breakthrough of the Zoji La Tunnel as a transformative milestone for the Union Territory, describing the mega infrastructure project as a “game changer” that will redefine connectivity, accelerate economic growth, and strengthen development across the region.
Reacting to the successful breakthrough achieved in the strategically significant tunnel project, Saxena said the Zoji La Tunnel is a dream initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will play a crucial role in ensuring year-round connectivity between Ladakh and the rest of India.
“The historic breakthrough of Zoji La Tunnel, a dream project of the Prime Minister, will prove to be a game changer in the development journey of Ladakh. It will significantly strengthen connectivity in the border regions of Ladakh and provide year-round connectivity with the rest of India,” the Lieutenant Governor said in a post on X.
The breakthrough marks a major engineering achievement in one of India’s most ambitious infrastructure projects, bringing the long-awaited goal of uninterrupted access between Kashmir and Ladakh closer to reality. Once operational, the tunnel will eliminate the seasonal isolation caused by heavy snowfall at the Zoji La Pass and drastically reduce travel time across the high-altitude route.
Responding to a post by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, who termed the breakthrough a landmark chapter in India’s infrastructure development journey and all-weather connectivity mission, Saxena expressed gratitude for the Centre’s continued support to Ladakh.
The Lieutenant Governor thanked Gadkari for facilitating the project and for championing several key road infrastructure initiatives aimed at strengthening connectivity in the Union Territory.
Highlighting the broader impact of the tunnel, Saxena said improved connectivity would not only enhance strategic mobility in border areas but also unlock immense opportunities in tourism, trade, employment, and socio-economic development.
He emphasized that easier access to Ladakh throughout the year would encourage greater tourist inflow, generate new livelihood opportunities for local communities, and support ongoing efforts to achieve sustainable development in the region’s challenging high-altitude terrain.
The Zoji La Tunnel is expected to emerge as a vital lifeline for Ladakh, enhancing accessibility, improving logistics, strengthening national security, and contributing significantly to the region’s long-term growth and prosperity.
