JAMMU, AUGUST 10, 2026 : Police have arrested the owner and driver of a matador after 33 passengers, including several teenagers and children, were injured in a road accident near Super Specialty Hospital in Jammu on Sunday night.

According to officials, the matador, bearing registration number JK02BE-4479, was involved in the accident while allegedly carrying 38 passengers despite having a permitted seating capacity of only 16.

The vehicle was subsequently seized by police and taken into custody as part of the investigation.

Police said the accident occurred due to rash driving, resulting in injuries to 33 passengers. All the injured were taken to Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu, where they received medical treatment.

The incident has raised serious concerns over the operation of an overcrowded passenger vehicle, particularly given that the number of occupants was more than twice the vehicle’s designated capacity.

Questions are also being raised over the alleged violation of passenger-safety regulations and the circumstances that allowed the vehicle to operate with such a large number of passengers.

The presence of a significant number of teenagers and children among the passengers has further highlighted concerns over road safety and the responsibility of commercial passenger-vehicle operators.

Police have arrested both the vehicle owner and driver, while the matador remains in police custody. Further investigation is underway to establish the complete circumstances of the accident and determine responsibility for any violations of transport and safety regulations.

The incident has once again underscored the importance of strict enforcement of passenger-capacity limits, responsible driving and compliance with road-safety norms to prevent avoidable accidents and protect the lives of commuters.
