Srinagar, September 20, 2025 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday stated that the case of JKLF chairman Yasin Malik should not be politicised and must be decided solely by the judiciary.
Abdullah highlighted Malik’s transformation, noting that the separatist leader has consistently been a proponent of dialogue since renouncing arms. His remarks came after PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for a humanitarian review of Malik’s case.
Malik, currently serving a life sentence in a terror funding case, is also facing multiple other cases, including the 1990 Rubaiya Sayeed kidnapping and the IAF attack at Rawalpora.
Abdullah said:
“There is no need for politics. Whatever the political ideology, Malik gave up arms and chose the path of peace, supporting dialogue to resolve issues. Court decisions should be left to the courts. It is not good to put political pressure on the judiciary.”
On the recent flood devastation in J-K, Abdullah expressed hope that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit would result in a relief package for affected residents. He noted:
-
330 bridges washed away
-
1,500 km of roads damaged
-
Losses to government buildings, land, crops, and horticulture
The Chief Minister also addressed opposition criticism, stating it would not affect his government’s efforts to rebuild the region and revive the tourism sector, which suffered a setback after the Pahalgam attack.
