SRINAGAR, April 27, 2026 : Mehbooba Mufti has strongly criticised the government’s decision to declare a school in Shopian an “unlawful entity,” calling it a “flagrant injustice” against underprivileged sections.
🏫 Controversial Action
The institution — Darul Uloom Jamia Siraj Ul Uloom — was declared unlawful under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), following an order by Anshul Garg based on a police dossier.
Authorities cited:

- Concerns over radicalisation and security
🗣️ Mehbooba’s Response
Reacting sharply, Mehbooba Mufti said:
- The move targets poor and underprivileged students
- The institution served as a “beacon of quality education”
- It produced doctors and professionals serving the nation
She further alleged that:
- The action reflects “deep-seated prejudice and ill intention”
- The government is acting as a “mute bystander” to what she termed assaults on J&K’s identity and dignity
⚔️ Debate Intensifies
The development has sparked a broader debate between:
- Security concerns raised by authorities
- Allegations of injustice and bias by political leaders
Officials maintain that the decision was based on credible intelligence inputs and evidence, while critics question the impact on education and marginalized communities.
