Moscow , September 20, 2026 ; Ukraine launched a massive overnight wave of drone and missile strikes against Russia, with Russian authorities reporting that more than 1,100 Ukrainian drones were intercepted or destroyed across the country, including hundreds headed toward Moscow.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin described the assault as an “unprecedented” attack on the Russian capital. He said around 450 drones were destroyed while approaching Moscow, while strikes caused damage to the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building.

Two Killed, 20 Injured in Moscow Region

The attack caused casualties across the wider Moscow region. Governor Andrei Vorobyov said two people were killed and 20 others wounded. The victims were identified as a 74-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman.

Russian officials said emergency services were deployed to affected areas as authorities assessed the damage.

Zelenskyy Says Oil and Logistics Facilities Were Targeted

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv used a combination of drones and missiles in the operation, including Ukraine’s domestically produced Flamingo and Pelican missiles.

Zelenskyy said the strikes targeted oil and logistics infrastructure, arguing that such facilities provide financial support for Russia’s war effort.

“These are billions of dollars that sustain the war machine,” Zelenskyy said in a social-media statement.

Attack Comes During Russia’s Parliamentary Elections

The large-scale strikes occurred as Russia was concluding the third and final day of its parliamentary elections.

Sobyanin said the attack was intended to disrupt the electoral process but claimed the attempt had failed.

Russia was also conducting voting in Crimea and parts of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed. Kyiv has rejected those votes as illegal.

Russia Reports More Than 1,100 Drones Destroyed

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had destroyed or intercepted 1,100 Ukrainian drones over various parts of the country, as well as over Crimea and the Black Sea.

The reported scale of the attack makes it one of the largest aerial assaults launched by Ukraine against Russian territory since the full-scale war began.

Ukraine’s Long-Range Drone Campaign Expands

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion, Ukraine has significantly expanded its domestic drone industry and developed long-range systems capable of striking targets deep inside Russian territory.

Kyiv has increasingly combined long-range drones and missiles to target military, energy, oil and logistics infrastructure.

Ukraine says these operations are intended to increase the economic and military costs of Russia’s war effort and put pressure on Moscow.

Escalating Long-Range Strikes

The latest attack comes amid an intensifying exchange of long-range aerial strikes between Russia and Ukraine.

While ground fighting continues along the roughly 1,250-kilometre front line, extensive use of drones and ground robotic systems has increasingly complicated troop movements and battlefield operations.

The latest barrage underscores the expanding role of long-range drones and missiles in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, with both sides continuing to target infrastructure far from the front line.
