Srinagar, September 28, 2026 : The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly witnessed intense disruption on Monday as BJP members protested against a resolution seeking the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. The confrontation led to four legislators being marshalled out of the House.
The disruption began as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah moved the resolution calling for the immediate restoration of full statehood. The resolution called upon the Government of India to act urgently on the issue and forward the Assembly’s resolution to the Centre.
BJP Protest Sparks Ruckus
As Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather continued with the proceedings, BJP legislators entered the Well of the House and staged mock proceedings despite repeated warnings to maintain discipline.
Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma raised slogans targeting Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, prompting a reaction from National Conference members. The situation soon developed into a slogan-shouting exchange between the opposition and treasury benches.
The Speaker repeatedly warned the protesting members against disrupting the proceedings and indicated that strict action would follow if the disorder continued.
Congress Raises Election Commission Issue
Congress legislators also raised slogans against the BJP-led government at the Centre during the uproar. Congress MLA Irfan Hafiz Lone displayed a banner demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The issue of the Election Commission had already triggered protests inside the J&K Assembly earlier in the session, with Congress legislators carrying similar banners and demanding Kumar’s resignation.
Four MLAs Marshalled Out
The confrontation escalated as the protests continued. According to reports, BJP legislators Vikram Randhawa and Arvind Gupta, along with Congress legislators Irfan Hafiz Lone and Iftikhar Ahmad, were subsequently marshalled out of the House.
Reports also said the situation became physical during the confrontation, with BJP members allegedly using a microphone stand during the altercation. Assembly marshals intervened and escorted the protesting legislators out of the chamber.
Deputy CM Calls for Discipline
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary objected to the language used against the Chief Minister and urged the Speaker to direct the Leader of Opposition to apologise for what he described as “unparliamentary language.”
Chaudhary also stressed that the Assembly was not a place for street-style confrontation.
Speaker Warns Members
Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather repeatedly appealed to members to maintain the dignity and discipline of the House. He warned that legislators disrupting proceedings would be named and face action.
Despite the warnings, BJP legislators attempted to move towards the Speaker’s podium, further intensifying the commotion.
The episode highlights the sharp political differences inside the J&K Assembly over restoration of statehood, the functioning of constitutional institutions and the conduct of legislative proceedings.
The statehood resolution was subsequently passed by the Assembly, with the BJP staging a walkout amid the disruption, according to reports.
