Bhaderwah/Jammu, June 19, 2026 : The picturesque Bhaderwah Valley in Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a surge in eco-tourism as vast expanses of vibrant foxglove flowers blanket its meadows, hillsides, and mountain roads, transforming the region into a breathtaking floral destination and drawing visitors from across the country.

The bell-shaped blooms of Digitalis Purpurea, commonly known as foxglove, have painted large stretches of the valley in shades of white, pink, and purple, creating stunning landscapes that many visitors describe as comparable to Europe’s famed flower valleys.

According to officials, the flowering plant, native to Europe and parts of the Mediterranean region, is currently flourishing across several high-altitude destinations in Bhaderwah, including Jaie Valley, Guldanda, Thanthera, Hanga, Padri, Bhal Padri, Khanni Top, Bach Dhar, and along the scenic upper stretches of the Bhaderwah-Pathankot and Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate highways.

Tourists Captivated by Rare Floral Spectacle

The seasonal bloom has become a major attraction for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and flower lovers seeking unique travel experiences.

Akshay Paul, a tourist from Maharashtra, said he was astonished to witness miles of foxglove flowers lining both sides of the road during his journey from Basti to Chattergalla.

“Until now, I believed these flowers only grew in Europe. Seeing them flourish naturally in Bhaderwah was an unforgettable experience and undoubtedly the highlight of our trip,” he said.

Kavita, a flower enthusiast from Nagpur, shared that she specifically planned her visit after learning online about Bhaderwah’s extraordinary foxglove landscapes.

“Bhaderwah is among the few places in India where foxglove grows in such abundance. The sheer beauty and scale of these blooms make it a dream destination for flower lovers,” she remarked.

Another visitor, Simriti Sharma, described the valley’s floral scenery as “straight out of a fairy tale” and expressed confidence that with proper promotion, the bloom could become one of Jammu and Kashmir’s signature tourism attractions.

Tourism Stakeholders Seek Dedicated Floral Tourism Promotion

Adventure tourism operators and local stakeholders have urged authorities to capitalize on the natural phenomenon and position Bhaderwah as a premier seasonal flower tourism destination.

Vikas Sharma, an adventure tour organiser from Bhaderwah, noted that visitors exploring Jaie Valley and surrounding meadows are increasingly extending their stays to experience the foxglove-covered landscapes.

“Tourists are fascinated by these flowers, yet this incredible natural attraction remains largely under-promoted. Unlike many destinations that spend heavily on cultivated flower festivals, Bhaderwah enjoys naturally occurring foxglove blooms stretching across miles of landscape every year,” he said.

According to local tourism operators, the flowering season extends for nearly three months—from April until the end of June—offering a substantial window for attracting visitors and boosting local tourism-related businesses.

Historical Connection Adds to Bhaderwah’s Charm

Adding an intriguing historical dimension to the phenomenon, officials believe the presence of foxglove in Bhaderwah may date back more than two centuries.

Chief Executive Officer of the Bhaderwah Development Authority (BDA), Sanjeev Sharma, said studies indicate that foxglove seeds may have been introduced to the valley by European travellers during the early 19th century.

“This could explain why the species has adapted so successfully to the region and now grows in such abundance, enhancing the beauty of the bowl-shaped Bhaderwah Valley,” he said.

Foxglove Festival Planned to Showcase Floral Heritage

Recognizing the growing interest among tourists, the administration is now planning to leverage the floral attraction to boost eco-tourism and regional branding.

Officials have announced plans to organize a Foxglove Festival by the end of June, aimed at showcasing Bhaderwah’s unique floral heritage, promoting sustainable tourism, and creating new opportunities for local communities.

With thousands of foxglove blooms carpeting the Himalayan slopes and attracting visitors from across India, Bhaderwah is steadily emerging as one of Jammu and Kashmir’s most enchanting seasonal eco-tourism destinations—offering a rare blend of natural beauty, biodiversity, and unforgettable travel experiences.
