Srinagar, June 17, 2026 : Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, on Wednesday reaffirmed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) remains fully committed to restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. However, he emphasized that the timing of the move will depend on the prevailing security environment in the Union Territory.
Addressing the ongoing debate surrounding statehood restoration, Sharma said the Central Government has consistently maintained its commitment to fulfilling the promise made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. At the same time, he stressed that ensuring lasting peace, stability, and security in the region remains the government’s foremost priority.
According to Sharma, the Centre is focused on creating conditions where terrorism, violence, and public disturbances become a thing of the past, allowing Jammu and Kashmir to move forward on the path of sustained development and prosperity.
“The Government is committed to restoring statehood, but the priority at present is to ensure a secure and peaceful environment. Long-term peace is essential for the region’s progress and the welfare of its people,” he said.
The BJP leader highlighted what he described as significant improvements in the security situation over recent years, noting that efforts by security agencies and the administration have contributed to greater stability across the Union Territory.
He stated that the Government continues to work toward further strengthening peace and normalcy, while simultaneously advancing development initiatives aimed at improving the lives of residents.
Sharma asserted that once the security situation is assessed as fully conducive, the Government will take appropriate steps regarding the restoration of statehood in line with its previously stated commitments.
“The welfare of the people, economic growth, and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere remain the Government’s key priorities. Every decision concerning Jammu and Kashmir will be taken keeping in mind the interests of the people and the overall stability of the region,” he added.
The remarks come amid continued political discussions and renewed demands from several political parties and stakeholders seeking the early restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Statehood remains a significant political issue in the region, with various parties advocating for its restoration as an important step toward strengthening democratic governance and addressing public aspirations.
The Central Government has on multiple occasions reiterated its commitment to restoring statehood at an appropriate time, while maintaining that security considerations remain central to the decision-making process.
As political discourse on the issue continues, the question of timing remains closely linked to the evolving security and administrative situation in Jammu and Kashmir.
