Srinagar,  June 17, 2026 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called for transparent, efficient, and sustainable urban development across Srinagar, directing that all projects undertaken by the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) be executed in a time-bound manner while strictly adhering to planning norms and safeguarding public interest.

The Chief Minister made these remarks while chairing the 84th meeting of the Srinagar Development Authority (SDA) Board of Directors at the Civil Secretariat in Srinagar.

During the meeting, the Board reviewed the implementation status of decisions taken during the previous meeting and deliberated on a wide range of issues concerning urban infrastructure development, housing, land management, organizational reforms, and the progress of ongoing projects being executed by the Authority.

Officials presented an action taken report on previous Board decisions, including the identification of land for public infrastructure projects, progress on development initiatives, engagement of technical personnel, and various administrative measures undertaken by the SDA.

A detailed review was conducted on several major urban development projects, including the proposed Satellite Township at Rakhi Gund Aksha, Bemina, housing schemes, development of commercial assets, and other infrastructure projects aimed at improving urban facilities and services in Srinagar.

Referring to the proposed satellite township and upcoming housing projects, the Chief Minister emphasized the need to create modern, well-planned, and livable urban spaces that meet the aspirations of residents while maintaining environmental and aesthetic standards.

He stressed that housing projects must incorporate adequate civic and social infrastructure such as educational institutions, parks, playgrounds, shopping facilities, healthcare services, and other essential public amenities. He also highlighted the importance of quality landscaping and attractive surroundings to enhance the city’s overall urban environment.

The Board further discussed measures to strengthen the institutional capacity of the SDA, including the formulation of recruitment rules, implementation of employee welfare measures, and improvements in planning and development mechanisms.

Key proposals relating to the revision and implementation of the Srinagar Master Plan, preparation of zonal development plans, management of commercial assets, development of public infrastructure, and budget estimates of the Authority were also reviewed.

Reiterating his vision for sustainable urban growth, Omar Abdullah stressed the importance of strengthening institutional mechanisms and improving the delivery of civic services to address the growing demands of Srinagar’s expanding population.

The Chief Minister also directed the SDA to focus on large-scale housing projects to address the increasing housing requirements of the city. He further emphasized the need to improve parking infrastructure in congested areas and called for planned development of the Batmaloo area.

The Board additionally underscored the importance of making the Sangarmal Shopping Centre fully functional and directed the development of vacant land parcels surrounding the complex through the implementation of key public-oriented projects.

CM Lays Foundation Stones for Major Sewerage Projects

In another significant step toward improving urban infrastructure, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah laid the foundation stones for two major sewerage projects in Srinagar aimed at enhancing wastewater treatment capacity and strengthening sanitation services.

The projects include the augmentation and upgradation of the 17.08 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Brarinambal, being executed at a cost of ₹12 crore, and the construction of a new 2.5 MLD STP along with 3.95 kilometres of sewer lines at Chattabal, estimated at ₹14.54 crore.

The projects are being implemented under the Capital Expenditure (Capex) Programme by the Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED), Kashmir, and are expected to significantly improve wastewater management, environmental sustainability, and public health standards in Srinagar.

The initiatives reflect the government’s continued focus on modern urban infrastructure, planned city expansion, and sustainable development to meet the future needs of Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital.
