NEW DELHI, SEPTEMBER 16, 2026 ; India on Wednesday summoned the Pakistani Charge d’Affaires (CDA) and lodged a strong protest over what the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described as “unacceptable and unprofessional conduct” by a Pakistan Navy vessel that resulted in a collision with an Indian Navy ship in international waters of the Arabian Sea.
The MEA said the Pakistani diplomat was called to the ministry and was advised to convey India’s concerns to the authorities concerned in Pakistan.
According to the MEA, the incident did not result in any major damage. However, India objected to the conduct of the Pakistani naval unit and said it was contrary to the provisions of the April 1991 agreement between India and Pakistan on Advance Notice on Military Exercises, Manoeuvres and Troops Movements.
MEA Lodges Strong Protest
“The CDA was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs today and a strong protest was lodged with him over the unacceptable and unprofessional conduct of Pakistani naval units at sea that led to a collision with a unit of the Indian Navy,” the MEA said.
The ministry said the incident occurred in international waters and did not cause major damage.
India nevertheless emphasised the need for military units from both sides to exercise due caution and adhere to relevant bilateral understandings to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Pakistan Asked to Ensure Greater Caution
The Pakistani Charge d’Affaires was asked to convey to the concerned authorities the importance of ensuring that military units operate with due care and respect the provisions of applicable agreements between the two countries.
The MEA said such precautions were necessary to avoid a recurrence of incidents involving the armed forces of the two neighbouring countries.
Similar Protest to Be Lodged in Islamabad
The Indian Charge d’Affaires in Islamabad has also been instructed to lodge a similar protest with Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to the MEA.
The diplomatic exchanges come against the backdrop of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan and follow a series of measures affecting bilateral relations.
Reference to 1991 Bilateral Agreement
India has specifically cited Article 10 of the 1991 agreement concerning advance notice of military exercises, manoeuvres and troop movements.
The MEA said the conduct involved in the naval incident was in direct contravention of the provision cited by India.
The ministry’s statement did not indicate any major damage resulting from the collision or announce any further operational measures.
The incident and the subsequent diplomatic protest are now expected to be addressed through the established channels between the two countries.
