Srinagar, April 29, 2026 : In a landmark step toward strengthening connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will flag off a 20-coach Vande Bharat Express between Jammu and Srinagar on April 30. Regular passenger services are scheduled to begin from May 2, marking a significant upgrade in regional transport infrastructure.
This high-speed, modern train will directly connect Jammu Tawi to Srinagar, cutting travel time between the two capitals and offering a reliable, all-weather transport option through the challenging terrain of the Pir Panjal range.
The development builds on the milestone achieved on June 6, 2025, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first direct rail link between Katra and Srinagar. The extension to Jammu Tawi now completes a crucial segment of the long-awaited Kashmir rail connectivity project.
🌄 Engineering Through Challenges
The ambitious ₹28,000-crore railway project, initiated in the late 1990s, faced immense geographical hurdles. While rail services reached Udhampur by 2005 and began operating within the Kashmir Valley in 2008, connecting the valley to the rest of India remained a formidable challenge until 2025 due to the rugged mountainous landscape.
🚆 Modern Features & Enhanced Capacity
The newly introduced Vande Bharat Express boasts:
- 20 coaches (up from the earlier 8-coach service)
- Advanced Kavach safety system
- GPS-based passenger information system
- Comfortable rotating seats for enhanced travel experience
The train will cover approximately 267 km and operate six days a week, with no service on Tuesdays. Simultaneous departures from both Jammu and Srinagar are planned for operational efficiency.
📈 Boost to Tourism & Economy
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah highlighted the increased capacity as a major advantage, noting that the expanded service will accommodate more passengers and significantly boost tourism and economic activity in the region.
