Srinagar, April 28, 2026 : The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Tuesday staged a protest in Srinagar against the Jammu and Kashmir government’s decision to remove Urdu as a mandatory language in revenue records, warning of serious cultural implications.
Led by party leader Iltija Mufti, PDP workers gathered at Sher-e-Kashmir Park to voice their opposition, calling the move an “attack on culture and civilisation.”
Addressing the media, Mufti emphasized that while Jammu and Kashmir is home to multiple languages such as Kashmiri, Dogri, Gojri, and Pahari, Urdu has historically served as a unifying link among them.
She criticized the ruling National Conference, stating that the decision goes beyond administrative changes and reflects a political shift that could have “far-reaching cultural consequences.”
The protest highlights growing concerns over language, identity, and policy decisions in the region, as debates intensify over the preservation of cultural heritage.
