JAMMU, May 21, 2026 : Jammu & Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee president Tariq Hameed Karra on Thursday alleged that India is facing “diplomatic isolation” under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and accused the Centre of engaging in “jingoism and theatrics” on global platforms.
Karra made the remarks while speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event organised in Jammu to commemorate the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated on May 21, 1991, in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.
Referring to the country’s internal, economic and foreign policies, Karra claimed that challenges facing India were increasing and that the international support India once enjoyed was gradually weakening.
“Because of the internal and economic policies of this government, problems are increasing. Due to their external policies, the support India once had across the world is gradually diminishing,” Karra said.
He further claimed that global blocs were forming and decisions affecting India were increasingly being taken without the country’s influence.
Referring to remarks made earlier by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Karra said warnings regarding the deteriorating diplomatic situation had been ignored.
“The basic meaning of this is that India is facing diplomatic isolation. Rahul ji also said there is still time to stop this decline,” he stated.
The Congress leader urged the government to revise its policies and adopt a more inclusive approach, saying decisions should be framed keeping all 140 crore Indians in mind.
Paying tribute to Rajiv Gandhi, Karra described him as one of the architects of modern India who sacrificed his life for the unity and integrity of the nation. He also referred to the contributions of Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad in shaping independent India under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership.
Karra further stated that Rajiv Gandhi had played a major role in resolving issues in Punjab and the North East through democratic means.
Criticising recent government campaigns and public advisories, he said, “The kind of jingoism and theatrics displayed before the world makes Indians bow their heads in shame, irrespective of ideological differences.”
The remarks come amid continuing political debate between the ruling BJP and opposition parties over foreign policy, governance and national security issues.
