JAMMU, November 4, 2025 : Traders in Katra, the basecamp for Shri Mata Vaishno Devi pilgrims, have voiced strong resentment over the delay in resuming train services between Jammu and Katra, citing mounting economic losses and declining pilgrim footfall.
The Chamber of Tourism, Trade and Industry Katra (CTTIK) accused the Railways of a “lacklustre approach” toward restoring tracks damaged during the August floods, which severely disrupted the region’s railway infrastructure.
“Despite two months having passed, many trains remain non-operational, and group permissions for pilgrim specials are still pending,” said Raj Kumar, President of CTTIK. “Thousands of devotees face uncertainty, and local traders are suffering.”
Meanwhile, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Jammu, Vivek Kumar, led a comprehensive inspection of the Jammu–Katra rail section, accompanied by senior officials, to assess infrastructure stability and preparedness for winter. The team reviewed tunnels, bridges, signaling systems, platforms, and passenger amenities across key stations — Bajalta, Sangar, Manwal, and Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan.
A Railway spokesperson stated that structural safety and stability were being prioritized. DRM Vivek Kumar reiterated,
“Passenger safety remains our top priority. The inspection ensures the section’s reliability ahead of the winter season.”
As the pilgrimage economy continues to struggle, traders urge immediate restoration of full services to revive tourism and trade in the holy town.
